Eni has announced a significant gas discovery at the Konta-1 exploration well in the Muara Bakau Production Sharing Contract, located in the Kutei Basin around 50 km offshore East Kalimantan. Preliminary estimates indicate approximately 600 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas initially in place, with additional upside potential that could lift total volumes beyond 1 trillion cubic feet (TCF). The well encountered gas across four high-quality Miocene sandstone reservoirs, supported by extensive data acquisition and a successful production test that delivered strong gas and condensate flow rates, confirming the commercial attractiveness of the discovery.
The Konta discovery benefits from its proximity to existing infrastructure and nearby fields, enabling potential fast-track development and strong operational synergies. This success reinforces Eni’s near-field exploration strategy in the Kutei Basin and supports continued exploration activity, including plans to drill four additional wells in 2026. Operated by Eni with an 88.334% participating interest, the block will become part of a broader regional portfolio managed by a joint company established by Eni and PETRONAS. The partnership plans to invest more than USD 15 billion over the next five years to advance new projects, expand exploration, and support long-term value creation and the energy transition in Southeast Asia.
