Eni Discovers Significant Gas Offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia

Italian energy company Eni has made a notable wet gas discovery with its Konta-1 well offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia, drilled by Ventura Offshore’s semi-submersible rig SSV Catarina. Located in the northern Muara Bakau working area, the well reached a depth of 4,575 metres and initially produced 14 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) of gas, increasing to 19.8 MMcfd with a different choke size. During testing on 6 December, output reached 30.5 MMcfd of gas and roughly 700 barrels per day of condensate, with potential to reach 60 MMcfd if the choke is fully opened.

The discovery is expected to be tied into Eni’s under-development Kutei North Hub (Geng North) project. SKK Migas, Indonesia’s upstream regulator, praised Eni’s exploration efforts, highlighting the potential to strengthen the country’s hydrocarbon reserves and energy security. This success also signals continued growth prospects in the mature Kutei basin, where additional exploration targets like Meriam, South Meriam, Tambak, and North Konta are planned. Eni’s ongoing exploration demonstrates Indonesia’s enduring appeal for high-value hydrocarbon investments.
