Indonesia Hands Over Carbon Credits Ahead of Official National Carbon Market Launch to Drive 8% Economic Growth

The Indonesian government has marked a major milestone in its green economy agenda by officially handing over carbon credits in preparation for the full launch of the national carbon market infrastructure. Centered around the National Carbon Unit Registry System (Sistem Registri Unit Karbon or SRUK), the digital platform is scheduled to go live on July 9, 2026. Positioned as a strategic "new growth engine," this state-backed ecosystem aims to convert greenhouse gas emissions liabilities into high-value economic assets, directly supporting the administration's broader target of achieving an 8 percent national economic growth rate.

For its inaugural phase, authorities have targeted an initial volume of 31 million tons of CO₂ equivalent, which is projected to generate an economic transaction value of approximately 5 trillion rupiah. The deployment of the SRUK digital framework is designed to provide maximum transparency and legal certainty for market participants by systematically eliminating the risk of double counting. This secure structure is expected to attract substantial international Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) corporate investments into Indonesian nature-based solutions such as mangrove restoration and forest conservation creating an integrated pipeline that generates direct economic benefits for local communities protecting these vital carbon sinks.
