The construction of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project has officially started in the Palu Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Central Sulawesi, with a targeted investment value of approximately USD1.75 billion or around IDR30 trillion. The project is being developed through a partnership between PT Bangun Palu Sulawesi Tengah and Singapore-based Aslan Energy Capital. Indonesia’s government views the investment as a strategic step to strengthen the country’s clean energy ecosystem, improve industrial competitiveness, and support regional economic growth. The project is also expected to reinforce Palu SEZ’s role as a key industrial and logistics hub in Eastern Indonesia.
The BESS Gigafactory project will be developed in phases, beginning with a production capacity of around 8 GWh annually and potentially expanding to 12–15 GWh in future stages. In addition to battery storage systems, the development will include LNG hub facilities and support renewable energy integration, electric vehicle infrastructure, and export markets across ASEAN, Australia, and the United States. The investment is projected to create around 1,300 direct jobs and more than 3,000 indirect employment opportunities through supporting industries and supply chains.
