Indonesia Accelerates Copper Downstreaming to Strengthen National Defense Industry Independence

Indonesia is accelerating copper downstream development to strengthen the country’s defense industry independence and reduce reliance on imported ammunition materials. Although Indonesia controls around 3% of the world’s copper reserves, the country still imports key raw materials for ammunition production. To address this challenge, the government and state-owned enterprises are expanding cooperation between the mining and defense sectors to build an integrated domestic industrial ecosystem. According to the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Indonesia ranks seventh globally in copper reserves and eleventh in copper mining production.

A major initiative is the collaboration between MIND ID and DEFEND ID through PT Freeport Indonesia and PT Pindad to establish a brass cup production facility in Gresik with a planned capacity of 10,000 tons annually. The project is expected to support domestic ammunition manufacturing while increasing the added value of Indonesia’s mineral resources. In addition, MIND ID plans to expand downstream copper production through copper rod, wire, and pipe facilities based entirely on domestically produced copper cathodes. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader strategy to enhance industrial competitiveness, strengthen national security, and create sustainable economic growth through mineral downstreaming.
