Indonesia has strengthened its position as a strategic global partner after officially beginning fertilizer exports to Australia to support regional food security. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that the initiative responds to global fertilizer shortages caused by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. The first government-to-government shipment delivered 47,250 tons of urea fertilizer from Bontang, East Kalimantan, as part of a larger commitment totaling 250,000 tons that could later increase to 500,000 tons with an estimated value of IDR 7 trillion.
Australian officials, including Agriculture Minister Julie Collins and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s support in maintaining fertilizer availability and regional agricultural stability. Indonesia also confirmed that domestic fertilizer supplies remain secure due to a national urea surplus of around 1.5 million tons. The export initiative highlights Indonesia’s growing role in supporting regional food resilience while strengthening bilateral economic cooperation with Australia.
