Indonesia’s tuna industry is transitioning from a volume-based model to a higher-value economic approach as tuna exports surpassed USD 1 billion in 2025. Industry stakeholders highlighted that the sector is increasingly focusing on value-added products such as processed tuna and fillets, supported by stronger sustainability standards, export diversification, and improved fisheries governance. Major export destinations include the United States, Thailand, and Japan, reflecting Indonesia’s strategic role in the global seafood supply chain.
Industry leaders also emphasized the importance of maximizing the use of all tuna resources through a “100% utilization” strategy. Around 40–50% of tuna byproducts, including skin, bones, and scales, still hold significant untapped economic potential for collagen, pharmaceutical, and biopeptide products. The government continues strengthening quota systems, monitoring programs, and international certifications to ensure long-term sustainability and global competitiveness.
