Indonesia’s government is targeting the implementation of E20 fuel—gasoline blended with 20% ethanol—by 2028 as part of a strategic effort to strengthen national energy security. The policy builds on the success of the biodiesel program and aims to reduce dependence on imported fuel while leveraging the country’s abundant natural resources.
The initiative is projected to cut gasoline imports by up to 8 million kiloliters, supported by the availability of domestic raw materials such as cassava, corn, and sugarcane. With current fuel consumption reaching around 39–40 million kiloliters annually and a significant portion still imported, this policy is expected to create a more self-sufficient and sustainable energy ecosystem in Indonesia.
