Indonesia Advances Waste-to-Energy Plan, Prepares Rules to Market Plastic-Based Fuel

Indonesia is accelerating its waste-to-energy initiative by preparing new regulations that will enable the commercialization of fuel derived from plastic waste. This effort reflects the government’s commitment to transforming environmental challenges into sustainable energy solutions, while also supporting the country’s broader transition toward a circular economy. The initiative is expected to unlock new economic opportunities and encourage private sector participation in waste processing technologies.

Despite strong progress, officials acknowledge that production costs for plastic-based fuel remain relatively high, posing a challenge for large-scale implementation. However, ongoing regulatory development and policy support are designed to improve feasibility, attract investment, and strengthen Indonesia’s long-term waste management and energy resilience strategies.
