Indonesia is shifting its energy procurement strategy by prioritizing crude oil imports over refined fuel products, following the completion of the Balikpapan Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP). Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the upgraded refinery now enables the country to process a wider range of crude oil domestically, reducing reliance on imported finished fuels.
The government has secured new crude oil supply sources from regions such as the United States and Africa to ensure stable availability amid global supply disruptions. With improved refining capacity, the Balikpapan refinery can produce millions of kiloliters of gasoline and diesel, supporting domestic energy needs while enhancing flexibility in sourcing raw materials and strengthening national energy resilience.
