The community of Asiki Village in Boven Digoel has successfully initiated a strategic economic transition by shifting their primary focus from rubber to cocoa cultivation. This regional diversification project is designed to establish a more resilient and sustainable income source for local smallholder farmers. By adopting modern agricultural techniques, the village aims to produce high-quality cocoa beans that meet the growing demands of both domestic and international markets. This shift represents a proactive approach to land management that prioritizes long-term economic stability over volatile commodity cycles.
The local government and private sector partners are providing essential technical training to ensure the success of this transition. Collaborative efforts are focused on improving the post-harvest supply chain and establishing direct links with global cocoa distributors. This initiative is expected to transform Asiki into a specialized cocoa production hub, significantly boosting the regional GDP of South Papua. Moving forward, the synergy between community engagement and industrial support will be crucial in positioning this sustainable plantation model as a benchmark for rural economic development.
