Government Prepares National Oil Storage Investment to Strengthen Energy Security

The Indonesian government is preparing a major investment initiative to develop national oil storage infrastructure as part of its strategy to strengthen long-term energy security. The plan, led by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, focuses on building large-scale storage facilities to increase the country’s strategic fuel reserves and ensure greater stability in energy supply.

Currently, Indonesia’s oil storage capacity can only support domestic demand for around 23–25 days, which is considered relatively limited compared with international standards. Through the development of new storage facilities—expected to be located in Sumatra—the government aims to expand reserves to cover up to three months of national energy needs. This initiative reflects a proactive effort to strengthen resilience against global energy market volatility while supporting sustainable economic growth.
