Indonesia has requested authorization from the World Trade Organization (WTO) to suspend trade concessions to the European Union after the bloc did not fully comply with WTO rulings related to palm oil policies. The request was submitted to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body following the EU’s failure to meet the deadline to adjust its regulations in line with the ruling on the palm oil dispute. Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that the suspension would initially focus on the goods sector, although the possibility of expanding the measure to other sectors remains open.
The government emphasized that the move aims to safeguard Indonesia’s rights under WTO rules while ensuring that any economic losses from the dispute are carefully calculated. Authorities also highlighted that the process has been coordinated with various stakeholders, including industry associations such as the Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI) and the Indonesian Biofuel Producers Association (APROBI). Indonesia remains committed to maintaining constructive bilateral relations with the European Union while seeking fair treatment for its palm oil sector and protecting export opportunities.
