The successful inaugural direct export of processed Yellowfin tuna from Jayapura to Los Angeles marks a significant milestone for Papua’s maritime industry. This shipment, executed by PT Chen Woo Fishery, effectively transitions the region from exporting raw materials to high-value processed goods such as tuna loins and poke cubes. By establishing a direct export route, local stakeholders have successfully reduced supply chain dependencies and ensured that a greater share of economic value remains within the province. This strategic move not only meets the stringent quality standards of the United States market but also officially positions Papua as a key contributor to Indonesia's national export foreign exchange.
This achievement is the result of a robust synergy between Jayapura Customs, the provincial Marine and Fisheries Department, and the local Quarantine Authority. These institutions provided intensive assistance to ensure that all health, quality, and administrative documents were meticulously fulfilled for international compliance. The implementation of downstreaming in the fisheries sector is expected to create new employment opportunities and increase the absorption of catches from local fishermen. Moving forward, the government remains committed to facilitating a business-friendly environment that empowers local enterprises to compete confidently on the global stage.
