Indonesia is set to conduct trials of hydrogen-powered buses, cars, and retrofitted motorcycles on Jakarta’s Sudirman-Thamrin corridor on July 23, 2026, marking a major stride in establishing a national hydrogen ecosystem and promoting the country’s clean energy transition. The announcement was made by Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot during a virtual pre-summit session of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026. The initiative aims to build confidence among stakeholders by showcasing the practical application of hydrogen technology in transportation.
Currently, Indonesia’s hydrogen use, primarily in fertilizer production and oil refining, totals approximately 1.75 million tons annually. By expanding hydrogen applications to the transport sector, the government seeks to diversify its energy sources and reinforce its strategic plan under Government Regulation No. 40 of 2025, which targets hydrogen and ammonia to contribute 10–12% to the primary energy mix by 2060. GHES 2026 will also feature conferences, business matching sessions, and vehicle test drives to encourage collaboration across sectors, supporting Indonesia’s energy transition and net-zero emissions ambitions.
