The Ministry of Agriculture recorded a positive performance in national sugar production, reaching 2.67 million tons, or approximately 97.54 percent of the target, throughout 2025. This achievement was supported by a total national sugarcane production of 39.07 million tons, with average productivity exceeding the government's strategic plan targets. This success is the result of various upstream interventions, such as the ratoon replacement program, the use of superior seed varieties, and intensive technical assistance provided to farmers. East Java remains the primary production center, followed by Lampung and Central Java, which consistently contribute to maintaining domestic sugar stocks.
For association members and business players, this production increase momentum serves as a significant opportunity to accelerate the national sugar self-sufficiency target by 2027. The government continues to encourage the modernization of the sugar industry and the expansion of planting areas in various provinces outside Java, such as North Sumatra, South Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara. Financial support through Special Sugarcane KUR and the provision of modern agricultural machinery is expected to improve cost efficiency and farmer income sustainably. With a strengthened seeding system and integrated sugar mill revitalization, the plantation sector is optimistic about reducing import dependency while bolstering food security and the welfare of sugarcane farmers across Indonesia.
