Indonesia has expressed strong optimism regarding the approval of the Indonesia–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), following the completion of its legal text translation into 24 languages for deliberation in the European Parliament. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that political groups across the spectrum—from the far left to the far right—have shown support for the pact. The agreement is considered one of Indonesia’s most strategic trade milestones, granting zero-tariff access to 90% of Indonesian exports to Europe, while providing reciprocal benefits for European goods entering Indonesia. The pact also includes an advanced digital trade chapter, making it more comprehensive than the EU–Singapore agreement.
Airlangga highlighted that negotiations have led to a positive shift in EU policy, including the proposed postponement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) to 2027. Indonesia has long advocated for a relaxation of this rule, which many developing countries view as burdensome, especially for smallholders in the palm oil, rubber, coffee, and cocoa sectors. The EUDR requires exporters to provide strict proof that their products are free from links to deforestation occurring after December 31, 2020. A delay in implementation gives Indonesia additional space to adapt compliance mechanisms while safeguarding smallholder access to the European market.
