A strong appeal has been launched by the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) to enhance the resilience and competitiveness of the fisheries sector in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Senator Mirah Midadan Fahmid advocated for strategic collaboration, particularly with the state-owned enterprise, PT Perikanan Indonesia, to strengthen the entire supply chain.
Addressing persistent issues, the Senator highlighted that fishery products, which are the backbone of NTB’s coastal economy—including premium commodities like tuna, skipjack, and various aquaculture products—are often hampered by critical logistical challenges. These constraints include high shipping costs, a severe lack of adequate cold chain facilities, and fragmented market access.
"Managing the fisheries sector cannot be done partially," Mirah stated, emphasizing the urgent need for synergy among local government, BUMNs, industry players, and fishing communities. The core objective is to move beyond mere production and create a structured, efficient distribution system that maximizes added value and taps into broader export opportunities. This concerted effort is deemed vital to ensuring that local fishermen can transition to a stronger position within the value chain and achieve sustainable prosperity.
