The Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan (KKP) is boosting the effectiveness of marine spatial planning by strengthening synergy in the conservation of mangrove and seagrass habitats as well as rehabilitating degraded coastal ecosystems, aiming to optimize the contribution of blue-carbon zones for the nation. The effort emphasizes that blue-carbon projects are not merely about planning, but constitute part of a broader shift toward sustainable coastal economic development.
KKP plans to embed the allocation for blue-carbon activities, such as restoration projects and carbon-credit development, into regional spatial plans (Perda RTRWP) and relevant national regulations, ensuring that all uses align with the carrying capacity of coastal ecosystems. The program also engages coastal communities through regulatory preparation, standardization, outreach, and sustainable funding; an example is the community-based “Ibu Bakau” project in Riau, which not only helps reduce carbon emissions but also creates jobs and strengthens local economies.
