The Indonesian Ministry of Industry is advancing efforts to have small and medium-sized batik producers comply with Indonesian National Standards (SNI) to ensure product quality and authenticity while enhancing global competitiveness. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that adopting SNI will protect cultural heritage, boost consumer confidence, and open export opportunities. Collaboration with the National Standardization Agency (BSN) and the Big Workshop for Standardization and Service of Craft and Batik Industry (BBSPJIKB) provides technical assistance and certification support to strengthen the national batik sector.
SNI 0239:2019 outlines classifications for hand-drawn, stamped, and combination batik, highlighting traditional techniques such as hot wax application and canting tool use. Director General Reni Yanita noted that standardization not only preserves cultural values but also promotes competitiveness by distinguishing authentic batik from mass-produced printed fabrics. Recent certification programs, including webinars and hands-on guidance in Yogyakarta, enabled 15 small and medium enterprises to participate, with seven successfully achieving SNI Batik certification. This initiative positions Indonesia’s batik industry as a culturally rooted yet globally competitive sector.
