The government is opening the possibility of imposing an export exit duty on coal starting next year. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that the plan to apply the exit duty on coal is still under consideration, with potential implementation in 2026. He explained that compared to other commodities — such as oil and gas, which historically had cost recovery schemes favoring the government — coal exports generate relatively lower revenue for the state. According to him, there remains leeway to increase government receipts from coal without harming the competitiveness of Indonesian coal on the international market, although the benefits to coal producers could shrink.
