The African region has long known and used oil palm oil, both as cooking oil and for other needs. Palm oil remains the most consumed vegetable oil in many African countries, reflecting deep-rooted consumption patterns in the region. To meet domestic demand, many African countries import palm oil, especially from Indonesia and Malaysia. From 2010 to 2023, Indonesia’s palm oil exports to Africa rose significantly: from about 1.19 million tons (roughly 27% of Africa’s total vegetable oil imports in 2010) to about 3.7 million tons in 2023—representing around 61% of Africa’s total palm oil imports.
Given Africa’s large population (about 1.37 billion people), a combined GDP of around USD 3 trillion, and regional trade frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), the region is seen as a highly strategic—and growing—market for Indonesian palm oil.
