BPS: Australia Becomes Papua’s Largest Export Destination in March 2025

The Papua Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Australia was the top destination for Papua's exports in March 2025, accounting for USD 3,178.13 million or 54.08% of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia with USD 2,237.77 million (23.08%), Papua New Guinea with USD 236.11 million (4.02%), and New Zealand with USD 213.18 million (3.63%). Total exports from Papua reached USD 5,876.66 million, consisting of USD 5,876.50 million in non-oil and gas exports and USD 0.16 million in oil and gas exports. Most of the non-oil exports came from wood and wood products (HS44), totaling USD 5,623.66 million, with the remaining USD 252.84 million from other non-oil commodities. Compared to February, Papua’s exports in March declined by 11.88%.

Setyo Wahyudi, Assistant for Economic Affairs and Development at the Papua Provincial Secretariat, emphasized the region’s strong export potential in fish, coffee, cocoa, and handicrafts. However, he noted the need to boost production to ensure sustainability. He called on businesses to continue improving product quality while the government and related agencies work on establishing infrastructure for direct exports. Currently, only wood is exported regularly, but direct exports of fish, cocoa, and coffee are expected to follow. Although Papua has previously engaged in export activities, most were not direct, and the government is actively pushing for improvements to make direct exports a reality.
