North Sumatra (Sumut) recorded a strong export performance in February 2025, reaching USD 1.002 billion—a 9.03% increase compared to January. On a year-on-year basis, exports surged 34.23% from February 2024, according to Misfarudin, Chief Statistician at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Sumatra. The province’s top export contributor was animal/vegetable fats and oils (HS Code 15), accounting for 42.11% or USD 422.19 million. Chemical products (HS Code 38) followed, making up 15.86% or USD 159.04 million of total exports. Sector-wise, agricultural exports rose by 4.03% (USD 2.69 million), while the industrial sector grew by 9.41% (USD 80.26 million), with the latter contributing over 93% of total export value.
Although exports of rubber and rubber products dropped 11.95% (USD 11.26 million), and soaps and cleaning products declined by 12.03% (USD 6.16 million), the overall export value was bolstered by a 20.57% increase in fats and oils and a 14.42% rise in chemical products. North Sumatra's main export destinations were China (USD 144.94 million), the United States (USD 128.48 million), and India (USD 56.67 million). Notably, about 35.37% of exports went to non-ASEAN Asian countries, including Japan (USD 54.92 million) and South Korea (USD 20.65 million), highlighting the region’s growing role in broader Asian trade networks.
