The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is expediting the construction of the Integrated Marine and Fisheries Center (SKPT) in Sabang, Aceh, to support local fishing activities and stimulate the regional economy. As of now, the project has reached 78% completion. Ridwan Mulyana, Secretary of the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries, expressed optimism that the facility will soon begin phased operations, aiming to improve the livelihood of coastal communities, especially fishermen.
During a visit by Commission IV of the Indonesian Parliament, Chairwoman Siti Hediati Soeharto praised the progress and emphasized the importance of timely completion. She highlighted the need for increased budget allocation to support dredging efforts at the docking basin, which would further accelerate economic development in the region. The SKPT Sabang project, running from 2024 to 2025, is funded by a Japanese Government grant (JICA) of IDR 65.4 billion. The funds are being used to construct essential infrastructure, including docks, breakwaters, roads, administrative offices, and other supporting facilities. This initiative follows the groundbreaking ceremony led by Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in August 2024. He emphasized that this fishing port will serve as a strategic asset for developing Indonesia's outermost regions, particularly those with maritime borders near neighboring countries.
