Domestic Demand and Exports Rise, Indonesia's Manufacturing PMI continues to Increase

The Ministry of Industry stated that in January 2025, Indonesia's manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) increased to 51.9, up 0.7 points monthly. This was the highest figure since June 2024, driven by increased production and new demand from domestic and export markets. The Ministry of Industry's Spokesperson, Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, has stated that industry stakeholders enter 2025 with confidence, continuing to operate businesses with optimism for national economic growth. The growth of the manufacturing industry is evident from the surge in raw material purchases to meet market demands, and the sector's productivity is robust, with expectations of meeting domestic and export market demands. In line with the S&P Global report on PMI, high production activity has led to companies actively recruiting additional labour from January to the subsequent two months.

The Ministry views Indonesia's manufacturing PMI figure as potentially higher if the policy of relaxing imports of finished goods products is revoked. In addition, strategic and pro-business policies are needed to support the performance of manufacturing businesses in Indonesia, which contribute greatly to national economic growth. The Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency of the Ministry of Finance, Febrio Nathan Kacaribu, emphasised the government's commitment to maintaining industrial growth, maintaining real sector performance, and supporting policies that support industrial growth. The positive development of the manufacturing sector is also in line with the expansion of consumption and business activities since the end of 2024, further supported by an increase in the Real Sales Index (RSI) of 1% on an annualised basis in December 2024.
