Indonesia to Receive Major Investment Inflows from China

Many Chinese entrepreneurs are eyeing Indonesia for factory relocation and investment following Donald Trump’s election as U.S. President, said Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza. Speaking at the Sarasehan 100 Economists forum on December 3, 2024, Riza revealed growing requests from Chinese businesspeople to engage with Indonesian industrial authorities. He attributed this interest to the advantages of relocating industries to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, to avoid potential export losses to the U.S. However, Riza acknowledged Indonesia’s limited readiness for such large-scale investments due to regulatory issues requiring immediate reform. He emphasized that investment-related matters involve multiple ministries, necessitating cross-agency coordination to capitalize on global economic shifts effectively.

Chinese investors are targeting sectors such as electronics, textiles, and metals, aiming to establish industries across Indonesia, including in 144 industrial zones, 33 of which are outside Java. This move aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive for regulatory consolidation to secure the opportunity. Despite the administration being in its early stages, global economic dynamics have accelerated investor interest. Riza expressed hope that these investments would materialize to support equitable economic growth nationwide, highlighting the 414% growth in industrial zones as a contributor to regional economic development.
