Indonesia's Carbon Trading Market Reaches IDR 37 Billion in One Year

Indonesia’s carbon trading exchange has been in operation for one year. During this period, a total of 613,894 tons of CO2 equivalent has been traded, with a value exceeding IDR 37 billion. CEO of PT Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI), Iman Rachman, noted that the growth of Indonesia's carbon market has been positive, receiving strong interest from market participants. Since its launch on 26 September 2023, the number of carbon service users has increased from 16 to 81. Currently, 1.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent in SPE-GRK (Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificates) are registered, with 613,894 tons already traded. The carbon trading includes more than 420,150 tons used for offsetting through retirement processes.

Iman further explained that as of today, three carbon unit projects have been listed and are available for trade on the Indonesian Carbon Exchange. These projects include the Lahendong Unit 5 and 6 geothermal project by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energi Tbk, traded by PT Pertamina Power Indonesia, the new gas-powered Muara Karang Block 3 power plant by PT PLN Nusantara Power, and the mini-hydro power plant PLTM Gunung Mugu operated by PT PLN Indonesia Power. Looking ahead, BEI plans to facilitate carbon unit trading through the upcoming Technical Approval for Upper Emission Limit (PTBAEPU), aiming for transparent and easy carbon trading for companies. BEI has also extended its free registration fee period and will continue offering low transaction fees, ranging from 0.11% to 0.22%, one of the lowest globally.
