Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, inaugurated the first export of canned tuna to Canada in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Monday. PT Pasifik Masami Indonesia Banyuwangi is responsible for this initial export, with a total contract value of USD 10 million or approximately IDR 151 billion over the next six months with a North American company. Trenggono emphasized that the government is fully committed to improving the upstream system to ensure sustainable and high-quality production, which will benefit downstream processes. He highlighted the necessity of implementing measured fishing practices to secure the availability of raw materials for export. This approach aims to stabilize the industry by addressing upstream challenges to support continuous downstream operations. Acknowledging the current shortfall in raw materials, the minister noted that it is unrealistic to rely solely on domestic fish supplies, thus imports are necessary. Research by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries identified Biak Regency in Papua Province as an excellent location for tuna aquaculture, an effort to enhance upstream capabilities.
PT Pasifik Masami Indonesia's Owner/Marketing Director, Sherly Indrawati, confirmed the initial export contract value of USD 10 million or approximately IDR 151 billion. She emphasized the unlimited potential for marketing fisheries products abroad and the importance of ensuring a steady supply of raw materials through strategies like aquaculture. The company’s production capacity includes up to 70 tons per day of canned tuna and pre-cooked tuna loins, catering to both domestic and international markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America (Canada), and Oceania. In the same event, Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono also inaugurated the Fish Processing Unit of PT Pasifik Masami Indonesia, located at Jalan Raya Situbondo, kilometer 12 Silogiri, Ketapang Village, Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi Regency.
