Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced Indonesia's plans to export 2 gigawatts of clean electricity to Singapore. This initiative was discussed during the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting held at the St. Regis Hotel in Jakarta on 21 August 2024. The export plan is part of Indonesia's broader efforts to integrate its electrical systems with other Southeast Asian countries, particularly through the ASEAN Power Grid. In 2023, Indonesian and Singaporean companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding this electricity export.
Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, confirmed that Indonesia is prepared to supply low-carbon electricity to Singapore. The agreement is expected to position Indonesia as a global hub for the solar PV industry, contributing significantly to the global supply chain. Singapore plans to import 4 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by 2035, with half of this supply coming from Indonesia. This collaboration between the two nations aims to facilitate commercial projects that will develop low-carbon energy and support cross-border electricity trade and interconnection. This strategic partnership marks a significant step for Indonesia in advancing its renewable energy sector and expanding its role in the global energy market.
