Standardization Strengthens the Implementation of Circular Economy Principles

The Triple Planetary Crisis, encompassing climate change, pollution, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss, poses a severe threat to sustainable development and human life on Earth. Addressing these challenges requires progressive actions to harmonize economic aspects with environmental preservation through the implementation of standard-based circular economy practices. Zakiyah, Deputy for Standard Implementation and Conformity Assessment at the National Standardization Agency (BSN), emphasized the importance of developing standards related to the circular economy, which establish frameworks, guidelines, support tools, and requirements for activities across all involved organizations to maximize contributions to sustainable development. She outlined the principles of the circular economy, including refuse, rethink, reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, recycle, and recover. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 59000 Series standards, including ISO 59004:2024 Circular Economy – Vocabulary, Principles, and Guidance for Implementation; ISO 59010:2024 Circular Economy – Guidance on the Transition of Business Models and Value Networks; and ISO 59020:2024 Circular Economy – Measuring and Assessing Circularity Performance, will be adopted as Indonesian National Standards (SNI) by December 2024 through Technical Committee 13-13 Circular Economy.

Bambang Prasetya, Chairman of the Expert Council and ICEA Judge, added that standard-based conformity assessment supports research and innovation in circular economy activities. He mentioned that the Indonesian Circular Economy Award (ICEA) would evaluate industry operations to determine their support for sustainability and provide assessments to improve existing systems, enhancing the application of the circular economy. This first ISO 59000-based award in Indonesia aims to reduce CO2 emissions by minimizing food waste and enhancing the principles of redesign, reuse, repair, and remanufacture in goods and services production. Priyantono Rohmattullah, Director of Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, emphasized the urgency of applying circular economy standardization.
