Indonesia, as the world's largest archipelago, holds significant untapped potential, including economic opportunities that could become substantial national revenue. Vincent Pieribone, Co-CEO and Chief Science Officer of OceanX, highlighted this during the "Deep Ocean Potential of Indonesia" discussion organized by the US Embassy in Jakarta on July 9, 2024. OceanX, a global nonprofit marine exploration organization, is currently on a Southeast Asian maritime expedition, including Indonesian waters, to address climate change impacts. Pieribone emphasized the direct and long-term economic benefits of marine exploration for Indonesia, such as fisheries and offshore wind power investments. He also stressed the importance of preserving Indonesia's natural marine resources, which are in excellent condition, for continued economic gain.
The "Mission Indonesia 2024" expedition by OceanX aims to assist the Indonesian government by providing valuable data to enhance understanding of Southeast Asian waters. Pieribone clarified that OceanX's goal is to support data collection, not to dictate policies. With accurate data, Indonesia can better protect its marine environment. This mission, conducted in collaboration with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), involves advanced technology, scientific research, storytelling, and immersive experiences to educate and connect the global community with the ocean. The mission began in Batam, Riau Islands, on May 8, 2024, and will conclude in Bitung, North Sulawesi, on August 25, 2024, after a five-stage exploration.
