Indonesia to Transition from Fishing to Aquaculture Within 10 Years, Says Maritime Affairs Minister

The Indonesian government aims to foster a blue economy in the marine sector, transitioning from a heavy reliance on fishing to aquaculture over the next decade. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that within the next 5 to 10 years, Indonesia must implement the blue economy concept by reducing fish capture and increasing aquaculture. "Where is the development of the blue economy in the Indonesian fisheries sector headed? In the next five to ten years, fishing must decrease, but aquaculture must increase," Trenggono said in Tual City, Maluku, on Monday, 3 June 2024. To support aquaculture, Trenggono noted that several improvements are needed, particularly in fish feed, which is currently 100% imported. The goal is for Indonesia to eventually produce its own fish feed.

Trenggono highlighted the significant potential of Indonesia's fisheries industry, especially with the more sustainable blue economy concept. "Our fish are still in surplus. Hopefully, this will become our strength in the future," he said. While promoting aquaculture, Trenggono acknowledged that in the short term, Indonesia remains dependent on fishing. Therefore, the government encourages traditional fishermen to adopt new methods to ensure their catches meet standards. He emphasized that once fishermen achieve high standards and quality in their catches, export opportunities will increase. "Now we must leave traditional methods behind because our aquaculture sector is still very weak. Besides using traditional methods, we don't have best practice standards," Trenggono stated. This strategic shift aims to strengthen the sustainable development of Indonesia's fisheries sector, enhancing its competitiveness and ensuring long-term economic growth.
