South Kalimantan Makes Waves: 2.2 Tons of Blue Swimmer Crabs Exported to Malaysia

The Syamsudin Noor Airport Service Unit, South Kalimantan Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency (Karantina Kalsel) has certified 2.2 tons of fresh blue swimmer crabs destined for Malaysia, marking the first export of this commodity in 2024, valued at IDR 220 million. Quarantine officer Nur'aini detailed a series of inspections, covering document verification and physical examination to ensure completeness, as well as verifying the type and quantity of the commodity. Clinical inspections were conducted to ensure the crabs' health. The quarantine examination, held at the regulated agent (RA) of Syamsudin Noor Airport, is crucial to ensure the safety and suitability of the commodity, especially since these crabs will be consumed by the public there. Nur'aini emphasized that exported crabs must meet specific criteria, including not being in egg-bearing condition, with a carapace width above 10 centimeters or a weight exceeding 60 grams per crab.

Prior sampling of the commodity was conducted for laboratory testing at Karantina Kalsel to ensure freedom from pests/diseases. Following inspections, the documents were deemed complete and accurate, with the commodity and its packaging in good condition. Consequently, a Health Certificate for Fish and Fishery Product (KI-D1) was issued, guaranteeing the safety and quality of the food. Head of Karantina Kalsel, Sudirman, emphasized that these inspections are vital to maintain the quality of export commodities and prevent the risk of rejection by the destination country or notification of non-compliance (NNC), which could harm exporters. Karantina plays a critical role in ensuring that exported commodities meet the requirements of the destination country, safeguarding the continuity of trade in the abundant fisheries products of South Kalimantan.
