Sustainable Economy Opens Opportunities for Indonesia to Become a Global Destination

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Menparekraf/Kabaparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno reaffirmed the commitment to quality and sustainable tourism practices as the cornerstone of Indonesia's economic development. Speaking at the AVPN Global Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on April 23, he emphasized that through knowledge-based, green and blue economies, as well as inclusive and sustainable economies, Indonesia can unlock its vast potential as a global tourism destination. Indonesia has vocalized this commitment to sustainable practices in various international forums, including during its G20 Presidency in 2022 and its Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023. These events underscore Indonesia's leadership in global economic recovery. Sandiaga highlighted Indonesia's robust economic performance, with an average annual GDP growth exceeding 5% over the past decade. He emphasized that the current state of the Indonesian economy is favorable.

The commitment to sustainable tourism is evidenced by various ministry programs implemented throughout the year. Initiatives such as the Clean, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability (CHSE) program, the Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI), carbon footprint calculations, and waste management assistance demonstrate Indonesia's dedication to sustainable tourism practices. Sandiaga outlined several programs aimed at supporting future economic development, including the designation of five Super Priority Tourism Destinations. These initiatives aim to promote destinations beyond Bali. Additionally, the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for Tourism across the country offers diverse investment opportunities in accommodation, food and beverage, regenerative wellness and health tours, as well as other attractions in the creative and digital economy sectors. Through these initiatives and commitments, Indonesia is poised to further develop its economy while promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism practices, paving the way for continued growth and global recognition as a premier tourist destination.
