Made in Italy: Exports Account for One-Third of Our Wealth

Italy's export sector, driven by manufacturing, remains a formidable force in Europe, boasting a €626 billion contribution to the economy in 2023, nearly one-third of its GDP. Despite encountering challenges in 2023, such as disruptions in global trade routes due to international conflicts, Italy has experienced significant export growth over the past fifteen years, with a 30% increase predating the pandemic and a remarkable 70% surge overall. While lagging behind China and the United States, Italy holds the third position in Europe, with Germany as its primary trading partner, followed by the United States and France. Notably, the industrial regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia Romagna account for over half of Italy's exports, housing a substantial portion of its businesses engaged in cross-border trade.

The country's export success stems from its diverse industrial output, which comprises over 90% of its foreign sales, including machinery, engines, and gears. This manufacturing dominance reflects Italy's resilience and adaptability in navigating global economic shifts, despite facing stagnation in growth in 2023 due to broader economic uncertainties. The recent slowdown notwithstanding, Italy remains on a trajectory of long-term export growth, bolstered by its manufacturing prowess and strategic positioning in key European markets.
