Through Pesyar, BI South Sulawesi Pushes the Potential of Halal Products Towards Global Markets

Bank Indonesia's South Sulawesi Representative Office organized the South Sulawesi Sharia Economic Week (Pesyar) to promote local products' halal certification and their potential in global markets. Rizki Ernadi Wimanda, Head of the office, highlighted the global demand surge for Sharia economic products, with Muslims spending USD 2.29 trillion in 2022, a 14.5% increase from the previous year. Rizki emphasized the need to support Sharia economic activities, citing the significant opportunities presented by current global conditions. He noted Indonesia's high-value halal product exports to Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, reaching USD 13.4 billion in 2022. In South Sulawesi, Rizki identified local products, such as Wastra cloth, with potential to expand globally. He highlighted Indonesia's ranking as the fourth-largest market for modest fashion and second globally in halal food. Rizki stressed the ongoing need for support and collaboration from various parties to develop Sharia economics and finance in South Sulawesi, calling for strong cooperation between governments, businesses, religious leaders, academics, mass media, and society.


The 2024 South Sulawesi Sharia Economic Week, held in collaboration with the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC), aims to serve as a catalyst for the development of halal food and beverages and modest fashion in the region. The organizers hope the event will strengthen the branding of Indonesian modest fashion, increase literacy and inclusion in Sharia economics and finance, and enhance the capacities of Sharia business actors in South Sulawesi. The event features four main activities: the Sharia Fair, Sharia Forum, various competitions, and entertainment activities for visitors. Additionally, booths are available for consultation/services related to halal certification by the Halal Center and MUI's BPOM for MSMEs or businesses seeking halal certification.
