In October 2023, Italy's automotive industry exhibited positive growth, with the production index recording a 6.7% increase compared to October 2022. The motor vehicle manufacturing index, specifically, displayed a significant positive trend change of 23.9%, driven by a notable 21.8% surge in car production, according to preliminary data from ANFIA. Despite this positive momentum, the production index for parts and accessories experienced a decline of 7.9% in October. The Automotive Development Table, convened at MIMIT, has instilled confidence in steering light vehicle production back to at least one million units. The objective includes implementing supportive measures for the transition of components within the automotive sector. The growth in car production is emphasized by ANFIA's preliminary data, indicating that domestic car production exceeded 463 thousand units in the first ten months of 2023, marking a robust 21.8% increase from the same period in 2022. While the automotive sector displays growth, Italy's overall industrial production continues to decline compared to last year's levels, registering -1.1% in October 2023 and a 2.5% decrease in the first ten months of the current year.
ANFIA's General Director, Gianmarco Giorda, expressed optimism about the automotive sector's recovery. He noted that the positive trend in car production is expected to continue, projecting the production index to close 2023 at around 560,000 units, signifying an approximate 18% increase compared to 2022. The export of motor vehicles (new cars and industrial vehicles) from Italy, as of January-August 2023, amounted to 15.2 billion euros, while imports were valued at 23.2 billion euros. Germany, the United States, and France were the leading countries for Italian motor vehicle exports by value. The overall turnover of the automotive sector witnessed a positive change of 13.4% in September 2023, with a substantial increase in both domestic and foreign components. For the January-September 2023 period, the turnover grew by 23.5%, with domestic turnover surging by 29.6%, and foreign turnover increasing by 15.8%. The export of automotive components reached 16.9 billion euros, yielding a positive balance of 3.6 billion euros in the same period. The turnover of parts and accessories for motor vehicles and their engines maintained positive growth, with a 4% increase in September and an overall growth of 10.8% in the first nine months of 2023. The collaborative efforts of the Automotive Development Table, including key stakeholders like MIMIT, Stellantis, Regions, and unions, are expected to play a pivotal role in achieving the shared goal of revitalizing light vehicle production in Italy and supporting the transition of components.
