In October 2023, the value of exports of indigenous commodities from North Kalimantan reached USD 131.7 million, a slight increase from September, which stood at USD 130.8 million. The export boost is attributed to increased exports of crude oil, natural gas, and sawn timber, according to Mas’ud Rifai, the Head of BPS North Kalimantan, in Tanjung Selor. For October 2023, the mining sector experienced an 8.98% decline in exports, amounting to USD 98.03 million. Conversely, there was an upswing in industrial output, reaching USD 31.7 million, reflecting a significant 59.5% increase. The commodities exported via ports in North Kalimantan in October 2023 saw a remarkable surge of 181.46% compared to September 2023, totaling USD 136.2 million. Most of the exported commodities through North Kalimantan's ports in October 2023 were non-oil and gas products. The export value of non-oil and gas products from January to October 2023 reached USD 2.38 billion, marking an 11.88% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
The October 2023 export growth, compared to September 2023, was driven by a significant increase in the export of non-oil and gas mining products by 203.9%, agricultural products by 70.9%, and a 71.5% rise in industrial output, as stated by Mas’ud Rifai. In terms of imports, North Kalimantan saw a 116.8% increase in October 2023 compared to September 2023, totaling USD 98.6 million. Cumulatively, the import value for North Kalimantan from January to October 2023 reached USD 503.4 million, marking a 116.8% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Despite the import-export dynamics, the trade balance through ports in North Kalimantan continues to demonstrate a positive value or surplus. In October 2023, the trade surplus amounted to USD 284.74 million, experiencing a substantial 213.82% increase from September 2023, which had a surplus of USD 90.7 million. Overall, the foreign trade of North Kalimantan in October 2023 has shown growth, indicating the continuous economic development of the region, according to the Head of BPS.
