Local fishermen in Kahu-Kahu Village, South Sulawesi, are taking steps to rejuvenate their octopus fishing industry. They have implemented temporary closures at Jeneiya Beach Area, covering a 42-hectare expanse from September 1, 2023, to December 1, 2023, following a successful closure of 6 hectares in 2022. This approach involves prohibiting octopus fishing and the use of specific fishing gear, resulting in increased catches when the area is reopened. The initiative aims to protect octopus stocks and improve the local ecosystem. The community, village government, and various stakeholders have signed agreements to enforce the closure, ensuring its success and sustainable management.
Furthermore, this effort is part of the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) for octopus, conducted in collaboration with the Coastal Sustainable Foundation (YPL). Since 2020, they have worked with Kahu-Kahu Village's fishermen, collecting catch data, forming fishermen's groups, and facilitating discussions at the village and district levels. The initiative not only benefits the fishermen by boosting their production but also contributes to the preservation of the marine ecosystem. The hope is for this model of community-based management to serve as an example for other villages, promoting sustainable fisheries and the well-being of local fishermen.
