The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has reported a remarkable 166.12% increase in foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in 2023 compared to the previous year. This figure represents a substantial surge from the numbers in 2022. The Acting Head of BPS, revealed that cumulatively until August 2023, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia had seen a significant rise of 166.12% compared to the same period in 2022. By August 2023, we have recorded 7.44 million visits, whereas during the same period in 2022, there were only 2.79 million visits. She further explained that by the eighth month of 2023, the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia had exceeded the total visits for the entire year of 2022, which was 5.89 million visits. Despite surpassing the total foreign tourist visits of the previous year, the number of foreign tourist visits in August 2023 still falls below the figures for the same period before the pandemic in 2019, which reached 10.71 million visits during January to August.
Furthermore, she conveyed that in August 2023, the majority of foreign tourist visits came from Malaysia, totaling 174,800 visits with a contribution of 15.4%. This marked an increase of 12.79% compared to July 2023 (month-to-month). In the second position, she continued, tourists from Australia made 129,100 visits to Indonesia in August 2023, contributing 11.4%. However, there was a decrease of 9.79% compared to July 2023 (month-to-month). Tourist visits from Singapore, reaching 105,500 with a contribution of 9.3%, occupied the third position. This also experienced a 4% decline compared to July 2023 (month-to-month). Accumulatively, tourists from Malaysia, Australia, and Singapore have made the most significant contributions to Indonesia's tourism.
