Italian Cosmetics, Economic Survey: Pharmacy Sales Up by 5.8% in the Second Half of 2023

The Italian pharmacy cosmetics market is experiencing robust growth, with a projected 5.8% increase in the second half of the year, building upon the 5.9% growth in the first half. This trend is expected to push the sales value of pharmacy cosmetics in Italy to over EUR 2 billion by the end of the year. Overall, the cosmetics market is forecasted to conclude 2023 with a turnover of approximately EUR 12.4 billion, marking an 8.2% increase compared to the previous year.

The main drivers of this growth include online sales, which saw a 12.2% increase in the first half and are projected to grow by another 12% in the second half, as well as the perfume sector (+11.4% and +12%, respectively). The mass market (+7.4% in the first six months and +7.8% in the second half) and herbal stores (+8.1% and +7.5%) are also performing well. However, pharmacy sales show more modest growth, except for direct purchases and beauty salons.

Looking ahead to 2024, provisional estimates suggest an overall market increase of around 5.8%, reaching a value of approximately EUR 13.1 billion. For pharmacies, forecasts indicate a 4.1% increase in turnover for the following year. The Italian cosmetics industry has effectively managed cost pressures by keeping price increases below the general average for major consumer categories, with a 7.5% increase compared to over 12% for general consumer goods.
