In September, Italy saw a significant increase in car registrations, with 136,283 vehicles registered, marking a 22.78% growth compared to the same month in 2022. Year-to-date, a total of 1,176,882 cars were sold, showing a 20.57% increase over the same period last year. The Stellantis Group, a major player in the automotive industry, outpaced the market's growth, registering 44,406 cars in Italy in September, a 24.8% increase from the same month in 2022, raising its market share from 32% to 32.5%. Year-to-date, the group recorded 387,661 registrations, a 9.5% growth compared to the previous year, though its market share decreased slightly from 36.3% to 32.9%.
Despite the positive growth, the Italian car market continues to face challenges, including the lingering effects of the pandemic, the Ukraine conflict, rising car prices, and supply shortages. Notably, a significant portion of the registrations in September and throughout the year came from dealer registrations of new cars for the used market. This situation raises concerns about the aging of the country's vehicle fleet. Furthermore, a substantial percentage of dealers do not foresee improvements in the market in the coming months, with many expecting price increases, highlighting the ongoing uncertainties in the industry. The transition to low-emission vehicles, such as electric cars, faces obstacles related to economic factors and infrastructure development, making it crucial for Italy to create an effective plan, potentially in collaboration with the Stellantis Group, to stimulate demand for eco-friendly vehicles and promote the renewal of the vehicle fleet.
