The national manufacturing sector continues to show resilience amidst global economic dynamics. In August 2023, Indonesia's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reached 53.9, surpassing Europe's 43.5, the United States' 47.9, and Japan's 49.6. This was highlighted by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani during the APBN KiTa Press Conference in September 2023. She noted that many major countries, including Europe, America, and Japan, were still experiencing contraction in their manufacturing activities, while Indonesia maintained an expanding PMI at 53.9.
Sri Mulyani also mentioned that China's PMI for manufacturing had entered the expansion zone at 51.0 in August, a notable improvement from its contraction in July 2023. Similarly, India is currently experiencing growth and economic performance, with a high PMI for manufacturing at 58.6. Indonesia's neighboring countries, like Vietnam, are also transitioning from contraction to expansion, with Vietnam's manufacturing PMI at 50.5. However, a significant percentage of countries, especially in Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and some ASEAN nations like Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore, continue to have contractive PMIs.
On a different note, the Ministry of Industry is actively monitoring emissions in the viscose rayon industry to control harmful gas emissions. The viscose rayon industry, which produces semi-synthetic rayon from wood pulp, is being closely observed due to the presence of harmful emissions, particularly sulfur dioxide (SOx), during the viscose manufacturing process. Companies in this sector are required to install Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to monitor their emissions. Recent inspections have shown that companies such as PT Indo Bharat Rayon and PT South Pacific Viscose are effectively meeting environmental quality standards. The Ministry of Industry is also drafting regulations for green industry standards in the rayon industry, aiming to ensure compliance with environmental standards and minimize the industry's negative impact on the environment.
