In Indonesia, the abundant marine fisheries resources offer significant potential for economic growth and job creation, with a particular focus on marine fish production. The fisheries sector encompasses a wide array of participants, including fishermen, harbor management, traders, transportation services, and small and medium-sized food processing industries (IKM). IKM plays a crucial role in adding value to the region's primary commodities, such as marine fish, and this is evident in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi, known for its rich and high-quality marine fish production. The collaboration between the Ministry of Industry and the local government has led to the establishment of the IKM Processing Center in Sinjai, which has been in operation since 2017. This center aims to support new industrial players and enhance the value chain of marine fish by providing suitable production facilities for IKM entrepreneurs. These facilities have enabled the production of a variety of high-quality processed fish products, creating job opportunities for the local population and transitioning from raw fish sales to higher-value processed products.
Reni Yanita, Director-General of Small and Medium Industry and Miscellaneous Industries, emphasized the center's role in maximizing the region's fisheries potential. She noted that the Sinjai IKM Processing Center is a success story, exemplifying how strategic investments in production facilities can empower IKM entrepreneurs to generate high-quality fish-based products, thereby increasing economic value and benefiting both the local community and fishermen. The center has boosted the monthly production of processed fish products to 5.5 tons, valued at over IDR 100 million. It has also established partnerships with local fishermen, ensuring a steady market for their catch. Additionally, the center's cold storage and fillet fish processing line support both local IKM needs and export market requirements, contributing to the sustainable development of the local fish processing industry.
