A nickel-based processing and refining (smelter) industry is set to be established in the cities of Balikpapan and the Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, with a total investment value of IDR 36.5 trillion. The Deputy Governor of East Kalimantan, Hadi Mulyadi, stated in his announcement in Samarinda on Tuesday that the first nickel smelter plant will be located in Balikpapan City, precisely in the Kariangau area, with an investment of IDR 6.5 trillion by PT Mitra Murni Perkasa (MMP). He continued that the second smelter plant will be located in Pendingin, Sanga Sanga Subdistrict, Kutai Kartanegara, with an investment of IDR 30 trillion by PT Kalimantan Ferro Industry (KFI).
Construction has already commenced for the Smelter Nickel Matte plant in West Balikpapan City, marked by the laying of the first stone by the Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. This plant is planned to process raw materials for batteries. Meanwhile, information regarding the smelter plant in Kutai Kartanegara indicates that its construction will be officially inaugurated in the near future. To ensure the smooth construction and operation, the Deputy Governor hopes that PT MMP will establish harmonious relations with the surrounding communities. According to him, with good relations, the company's activities will also run smoothly.
The Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, accompanied by the President Director of PT MMP, Adhi Mustopo, stated that the construction of the Smelter Nickel Matte supports the battery industry in Indonesia. The investment by MMP is 100% domestic investment, with the hope of realising a beneficial downstream industry and supporting the development of the national battery industry. The target is to complete the construction of the plant by the end of 2024, followed by its operation, as well as the development of its derivatives and the production of national batteries.
