The Manokwari Regency government is taking proactive steps to control inflation by optimizing inland fisheries and rice production. Bupati Manokwari Hermus Indou outlined this strategy as part of the 4K scheme for inflation control, which includes affordability of prices, supply availability, smooth distribution, and effective communication. Manokwari Regency, in August 2023, experienced the highest inflation rate among cities and regencies in Indonesia. The region saw an inflation rate of 0.55% (month-on-month) or 6.40% (year-on-year). To ensure the availability of rice supplies, Hermus Indou emphasized the need to increase rice production, even though the rice cultivation area in Manokwari has not expanded. The focus will be on enhancing the productivity of unproductive farming areas, such as those in SP 1, by upgrading them from level 1 to level 2.
Regarding the fisheries sector, the Manokwari Regency government has authority over inland fisheries. Therefore, the emphasis will be on optimizing inland fisheries, particularly as a solution for times when rough weather conditions disrupt marine fishing. Inland fisheries involve the cultivation of freshwater fish species like tilapia, catfish, gourami, and pangasius. To address the scarcity of chili peppers (rica) and tomatoes in Manokwari, Hermus Indou highlighted the importance of community gardens in each village to ensure sufficient local stock. The goal is to secure ample supplies for the local region and then distribute surplus produce to other areas in need, thus alleviating shortages.
