Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan accompanied President Joko Widodo in a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday, September 10th, in New Delhi, India. Minister Zulkifli Hasan mentioned that one of the topics discussed during the meeting was the hope for Italy's support regarding Indonesian palm oil commodities in light of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). "The meeting between the President of Indonesia and the Italian Prime Minister discussed efforts to strengthen the relations between both countries. Indonesia also hopes for Italy's support regarding our palm oil products in light of the European Union Deforestation Regulation. Italy understands the issue and is willing to discuss it," stated Minister Zulkifli Hasan after the meeting.
This bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Italy took place on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, which was chaired by India from September 9th to 10th, 2023. Minister Zulkifli Hasan expressed Indonesia's appreciation for Italy's increased investment in the country and Italy's commitment to the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) scheme. Indonesia also extended an invitation to Italy to participate in the development of electric vehicle ecosystems, green infrastructure, and the construction of the new Indonesian capital. In the period from January to July 2023, Indonesia's total trade with Italy reached USD 2.58 billion, with Indonesia enjoying a surplus of USD 349 million. Key Indonesian exports to Italy include palm oil and its derivatives, coal, carboxylic acids for industry, and stainless steel in various forms, while imports from Italy consist of travel equipment, washing machines, helicopters and aircraft, and machine parts.
