Manufacturing in Indonesia Shows 0.6 Point Increase in August 2023

Indonesia's manufacturing industry continues to display growing confidence in expanding its operations, driven by increasing market demand and favorable government policies. This optimism is reflected in the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for Indonesian Manufacturing, as reported by S&P Global. In August 2023, the PMI reached a level of 53.9, marking a 0.6 point increase compared to the previous month when it stood at 53.3. Minister of Industry stated that the expansion rate of the PMI Manufacturing is still driven by growth in new demand, especially from overseas or the global market, which is accelerating production and, in turn, has led to increased employment opportunities. The PMI for Indonesian Manufacturing in August 2023 has remained above 50 points for 24 consecutive months, signifying that the Indonesian manufacturing sector remains in an expansive state. The expansion rate in August 2023 is also the fastest in nearly a year.

The vibrancy of the Indonesian manufacturing industry is further evident through the positive performance of the Industrial Confidence Index (ICI) in August 2023, released by the Ministry of Industry, which reached a level of 53.22, indicating an expansion phase. Additionally, the impressive growth of the national manufacturing industry is reflected in the Prompt Manufacturing Index (PMI) by Bank Indonesia for the second quarter of 2023, showing an expansion rate of 52.39%, higher than the previous quarter's 50.75%. Both the PMI manufacturing survey and ICI are consistent with the overall economic growth of 5.17% recorded in the second quarter of 2023, with the industrial sector contributing 16.30% to the GDP during that period. Given that the industrial sector plays a pivotal role in economic growth, the government remains committed to advancing industrialization through downstream policies aimed at increasing the value of domestic raw materials, employing local labor, and generating revenue such as taxes. As President Joko Widodo has emphasized, downstream policies represent a window of opportunity for Indonesia to progress, given the country's rich natural resources, including minerals, agricultural products, marine resources, and renewable energy sources. These policies aim to optimize local content and promote collaboration with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, and fishermen, ensuring that the benefits are directly felt by the grassroots.
