KKP Optimistic that Blue Economy Will Make Indonesia the World's Largest Exporter of Ornamental Fish

Indonesia's export value of ornamental fish has shown significant growth over the past three years, propelling the nation to the second position among global ornamental fish exporters, up from its previous rank of fifth. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), processed by the Directorate General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP), Indonesia's ornamental fish exports reached USD 30.76 million (IDR 447.78 billion) in 2020, which increased to USD 34.55 million (IDR 494.47 billion) in 2021. These figures continued to rise, reaching USD 36.43 million (IDR 542.91 billion) in 2022. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is optimistic that its blue economy program will drive the growth of the ornamental fish industry and its derivatives, ultimately making Indonesia the world's largest exporter of ornamental fish.

The blue economy program is seen as a means to enhance the health of marine and aquatic environments, which is a crucial prerequisite for the healthy cultivation of ornamental fish. With sustainable ecological improvements, there will be a positive impact on the quality of ornamental fish that will be bred. The public must also continue to preserving the environment to protect the fish ecosystem, aligning with the spirit of the blue economy. The quality of water plays a vital role in the breeding of ornamental fish. Simple actions like limiting the use of single-use plastics can make a difference. Plastics are difficult to break down, and if they end up in rivers or oceans, they pose a threat to the fish living in them.
